Sketchbook

A lot of what I draw and paint stays in my sketchbook. It will never be framed. But I can show you some of it in this part of my Portfolio. For instance the birds and other subjects I sketched with fountain pen ink.

Sea bathing

Fountain pen ink

I have many fountain pen inks (and fountain pens) and love to explore the possibilities for making sketches with them. When making diluted washes sometimes unexpected colours will pop up. For this sketch I used Diamine 'Celadon Cat'.

Birds and bugs 1

Watercolour, pen and ink

When on holiday I always take a sketchbook. During a short stay in Garderen (NL) I sketched the birds around our holiday house and the many cockchafers that were really everywhere we went. This is the left page of the spread.

Drain Back

Coloured pencil

A friend of mine in the UK took this photo of a beach in Happisburgh, Norfolk. I loved it so much that I made a pencil drawing of it.

I don't draw people very often. This is Maria van der Zwan-Moerman. She is wearing the traditional clothing of Vlaardingen (a city in South Holland). This was her Sunday-mourning costume. Maria was born in 1862.
